Why does hair turn gray?

Over the years, there is a process of turning gray that causes our hair to take on a coloring that is first gray and then white. This does not mean that the hair or hair follicles are sick, but rather that they are aging along with the rest of the body.

Generally, white hair growth in an individual begins around the age of 30 in men and 35 in women. Of course, age is not an objective indicator as the timing of development varies in each individual. The reasons may be genetic, nutritional, metabolic and psychological in nature.

It has also been shown that individuals of Caucasian race tend to age earlier than Asians and African Americans. The reasons for this difference have not yet been identified.

What gives hair color?

Hair color depends on the amount and distribution of melanin pigments present in the hair.

The term melanin indicates the biological molecules whose purpose is to give color. In particular there are two groups of melanins to be considered: eumelanin (brown and black pigments) and pheomelanin (yellow and red pigments).

How does the process of incanutimento occur?

Hair, as well as beard and nails, represent the only parts of the human body that experience constant growth. Within the hair follicles, the processes that determine hair color occur.

As we age, melanin is depleted and there is an increase in a particular substance, hydrogen peroxide, which is capable of dying hair. It is none other than hydrogen peroxide.

The production of hydrogen peroxide is caused by the lack of the enzyme catalase. This substance inhibits thyroxine, an enzyme whose function is to process the natural hair pigment, melanin, within melanocytes.

Early doghood

In some cases, dogia occurs as early as 20 to 30 years of age. This does not mean that the body is already aging, but generally you are faced with diseases such as:

    • Pernicious anemia (Addison’s disease)
    • Vitiligo
    • Hyperthyroidism
    • Cardiovascular disorders;
    • High emotional stress;
    • Total or partial albinism;

Male and female hair

White hair, in men, usually appears in the temples area and then slowly invades the rest of the scalp.

In women, on the other hand, the hair loss affects the scalp.

How to counteract the process of receding hairline.

Hair loss is, in general, permanent. White hair, when it falls out, gives way to more white hair. The fact that the hair is white does not mean that it will not grow back.

In the case of Addison’s disease, complete repigmentation of the hair could be observed. In all other cases, dyeing the hair is the mostly chosen option.

Some researchers believe that the intake of Biotin (vitamin B8), in addition to strengthening the hair and slowing down hair loss, may also slow down the process of hair loss. It is recommended, therefore, the intake of eggs, yeast, pork, chicken and lamb, rice, whole wheat, green beans, lentils, nuts, soy and milk.

However, it is essential to reiterate again that doghood has no “cure” and it is, therefore, impossible to prevent the process from occurring.

Body hair.

The loss of melanin that leads hair to greying occurs differently in different areas of the body. This is particularly visible on those who wear a long beard.

Here, then, we observe gray hair and a beard whose typical coloration remains perfectly intact or vice versa.
