telogen effluvium

Telogen effluvium (known as effluvium) is when a large number of hair follicles are affected by external non-genetic factors. The result is a hair loss that is outside the normal range.

Effluvium and telogen phase

Usually the telogen phase lasts for a very short period of time compared to the other two phases of hair growth which are the anagen phase and catagen phase. The telogen phase consists of a short resting period of the hair that will be interrupted by an anagen phase where the hair grows.

What happens during this phenomenon and why do you lose your hair?

There are 3 types of telogen effluvium:

Environmental: This type of telogen effluvium has a fairly rapid onset and usually occurs a few months after the triggering event. Recovery from this type of telogen effluvium can take more than a year before the hair regains its volume and density.

Telogen phase prolongation: Usually this causes a reduction in hair caliber in the upper scalp area. The problem due to the prolongation of the telogen phase is much more gradual than in the previous case (environmental factors) but normally lasts longer.

Shortening of the hair growth cycle: There is a destruction of the follicle by the follicle itself. The follicular cycles shorten drastically, causing the hair to grow shorter and finer than normal, as the Anagen phase lasts very little.

Is hair loss permanent?

No, it is usually a temporary disorder that is reversible with time. As we have previously written, however, telogen effluvium may take as long as a year to fully return.

What is it caused by?

Telogen effluvium is always caused by external agents. The most common causes are hormonal disorders due to pregnancy, a self made approach in an unbalanced diet, chronic diseases, severe stress, certain medications like antidepressants, vaccinations etc. Usually removing the external factor will automatically (over time) solve the problem. Sometimes identifying stress as a trigger of telogen efflivium is very difficult.

Can telogen efflivium recur?

Yes, especially if the causes that led a person to suffer from it are many. If the TE lasts longer than 6 months this can be considered chronic. Your doctor may prescribe medications (e.g., minoxidil) that stimulate hair regrowth.

What can your doctor’s advice be?

Your doctor should refer you for blood tests or even request a scalp biopsy. If the symptoms persist even after removing all possible triggers, other possible diseases may be suggested. Some forms of Alopecia may look like telogen effluvium in the early stages of development.
